Fighting Between Armenia and Azerbaijan Risks Drawing in Bigger Powers

Escalation on both sides suggests that an extended conflict may ensue in Nagorno-Karabakh, increasing the possibility of involvement by countries like Russia and Turkey. Russia has a mutual defense agreement with Armenia that could take effect if the fighting were to spread to Armenia proper; Turkey, a NATO member, is allied with Azerbaijan, and Turkish-made drones hit targets in Nagorno-Karabakh, raising the specter of a proxy battle in the enclave.
